Here is a useful checklist of everything you need to do when moving -whether renting or purchasing

1-2 months before to moving:

Make moving arrangements with a professional moving company, or a truck rental company

Make a floor plan of your new home, and plan out where everything will go

Collect packing supplies – tape, boxes, tissue paper, bubble wrap, and markers

Advise post office of new address and date of move

Send new address to: Telephone and cable companies, Insurance company, bank and credit card companies, utility providers

Have your home insurance transferred to the new property

Call your utility companies to have services set up at the new address

1 month before moving:

Stop/Transfer newspaper and other home deliveries

Obtain your school, medical and dental records

Obtain vet records for your pets

Reserve your building’s elevator for your move date (if moving from or to and apartment)

A few days before you move:

Complete packing. Make sure boxes are clearly marked with the room they go in

Place your important documents in a ‘safe box’ that you will carry yourself

Prepare and ‘open first’ box with the basic necessities you’ll need for your first night in the new home

Your moving day:

Check all rooms and closets to ensure that nothing has been left behind
Ensure that your electrical items are unplugged and thermostat set to energy save mode
Leave your existing keys with the landlord, solicitor or your realtor
Check that you have keys for every lock in your new home.
Make sure that all utilities are on, and functioning in your new home
Provide your movers with a floor plan
Check the condition of each box and/or item being unloaded and delivered by your movers, and mark damage(s)

The next few days:

Change your address on your Driver’s License

Change your address on your Auto Insurance
